Title: Mama Potomitan
When Africa and Jamaica meet…Both Nigeria and Jamaica have face painting and hair wrap in their culture. Beauty, cultural pride, etc. so many reasons to wear it.
In Nigeria the face painting is traditional. In Jamaica, it’s also related to the Maroons (Black revolutionaries fighting against slavery for their freedom). The Maroons also made history in Ayiti (Haiti), my country, which was the first Black republic in the world, gaining his freedom from slavery in 1804. Ayiti national day is January 1st. Ayiti inspired many other countries from Central and South America, or Africa to fight for freedom.
MAMA POTOMITAN is also a homage to my roots and to all BIPOC women, all women who are the pilar of the society. In creole it means “POTO” = the pillar “MITAN” = central. So, women are the heart of the community, the potomitan of the struggle, the pillar of the revolution. We are the source of changes by the society we carry on our back, the seeds of change we foster with love.
I salute my mother Yvette Sylvain, my grandmother Lornecia Jeune, my great grandmother Grand Sisi.
